    Description

Vintage Mexican mask, hand carved wood, goat horns, what looks like goat hair, armadillo hide, although sometimes horned masks are lumped into the category of El Diablo, that is because of centuries of the church demonizing the former pre-Columbian religion, this mask is a representation of the Lord of the Animals, a benevolent super natural being that was the protector of wild beasts, masks like these were used by several indigenous groups across Mexico, and in several dances, I suspect that this mask would have been used in the Dance of the Armadillo in olden times, but probably made for sale in the 20thC, sings of handling and age, stable with no major cracks or chips, the approximate size at the widest points is 13 inches wide by 11 inches tall, it is not very heavy, but in order to ship it safely, a large box is required, and then what is called definitional weight kicks in, #1108
