exagonal Grivna. Dimensions: 19 mm expanding to 39 mm then back to 20 mm in width; 77 mm in length; and 11 mm in thickness. Weight: 158 g. Spassky Fig. 43; Kaim 31-4. RR!
A very rare and early Grivna type, cast in pre-Mongol Russia (Kiev, Novgorod, and Chernigov), uniformly weighing around 160 grams, and which typically circulated in the south for tax payments. Due to Kiev's destruction by Mongol Horde in 1240, generally few of this type have survived down to the present day.
