Hand made Hand Colored Mexican mask bought when I was in San Miguel Allende Art Gallery in storage 30 years.see picture for condition and size. I call it Diablo. Scary but also beautiful
This is a hybrid between a Tecuan (jaguar) and a devil (Diablo), decorative piece from the 70's the carving and paint is from San Francisco Ozomatlan in Guerrero state. Ozomatlan is know for its wood masks. This kind of mask was popular in towns such as Taxco or Acapulco at that time.
The most common uses are with traditional dances,which are a form of theater, with characters, story line and music, but the performs are not professionals. The use of masks and costumes was an important part of Mesoamerican cultures for long before the arrival of the Spanish.
