Flake coins have an amazing history. Researchers find it difficult to name the exact date of their introduction into circulation, but it is known for sure that their release stopped after the financial reform of Peter the Great in 1718. These coins got their name due to their appearance, it was believed that they looked like fish scales. Various metals were used to make the scales.
Most often it was silver. Much less often, copper was used. It is assumed that gold could also be used. The weight of the coins was small — no more than one gram. At the same time, the scales did not have a certain nominal value, their value was determined by the total weight. When buying a product, the coins were simply weighed. The process of making the scales was quite simple: silver wire was cut into roughly equal pieces, then flattened them. On the obverse, the name of the prince was most often minted, and on the reverse, various drawings.
For example, images of a rider with a spear, flowers, or animals. The inscriptions were poorly read, and the coins were irregular in shape. But, this was their plus: each scale was unique, it was almost impossible to find two identical ones. The shape of the coins did not pay much attention, because their main advantage is the weight of the precious metal, not the beauty.
